The vent cover broke off of my microwave. Mostly because it’s a cheap ass design. Both clips that hold it in place broke irreparably. In fact, I’m disappointed with all of the new appliances I’ve bought in the last five years. They really don’t make ‘em like they used to. This is the part in question:

Kinja'd!!!

Add in shipping and I could buy a whole new microwave. So for now, at least, it’s held in place with duct tape. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Fun fact: That’s actually the same part for the replace ment grill for the new Z.

Way cheaper than paying $631 from Nissan.

I went the duct tape route. So far so good.

That always pisses me off when a single replacement part is close to the cost of a whole new thing. Appliances always seem to be the worst offenders for this too.

Had to buy a bottle holder (not sure it’s the right translation) for my mother’s fridge that broke after about 2 years, it was like 40 or 50€ for a molded shitty plastic part and it was on backorder and took maybe a month to arrive.

Planned obsolescence (if you knowingly planned your product to have a short lifespan or useless costly repairs ) is actually a misdemeanor offence in France since 2015 and force warranties to be at least of 2 years .

I’ve been using a microwave without a handle for several months now. The replacement handle is $100 plus S&H. We’ve been pricing a new microwave.

1) Buy whole new microwave

2) Take off grill

3) Sell the remaining parts on eBay

4) Stack profits in Scrooge McDuck style vault and take a swim

That actually gives me an idea. The plastic grab handle on my NEW dryer broke off. Right now, I’ve got a carabiner looped through the holes on the door. But somewhere I have a suction cup thingy that I bought to take the class off my old iMac. Unfortunately, I have no idea where it is.

Not a terrible idea, but I’ll probably break the piece trying to take it off.

Alternative story - your 13 year old daughter takes a leave from her senses and puts a mug with a metal spoon in your microwave for a minute. Since we built the house in 2016 it came with an appliance package and that replac ement microwave was almost a grand. For the low price of $600 I was able to find a replacement that fit with the look of the other appliances, but also had to buy a new trim piece. From Home Depot (where I bought the microwave) it was $129, from Am azon it was $59 (or something like that), shipped from the factory.

My daughter was at least sorry, so I have that going for me.

We have an ancient Harvest Gold drier. The thing gets super hot and is awesome. The clip that holds the door closed broke. I had these super powerful low-profile “cabinet door” magnets that I used for holding down tape measures when assembling large frames as a welder. The wife swiped one, screwed it into where the clip was, voila. Fixed.

We replaced our W/D about three years ago because I got tired of repairing the dryer. The new dryer works well but is built as cheaply as possible, and the new washer, one of those new fangled HE washers that uses less water, sucks. It leaves white residue on all of the black clothes, and presumably on the others as well, we just can’t see it. You have to leave the lid up so it doesn’t mold inside, and you have to put bleach through a full cycle to clean it. It also takes forever to run a cycle. I hate it.

Not bad, but still.....

Thanks, but I think I’ll go with the duct tape for now.

Get some 3M double sided sticky tape, for automo tive trim. It’s been holding my drier door handle on for more than 6 years now.

I’m using something similar to hold my Ring doorbell on the vinyl siding. It’s been up there for at least two years now.

Reasons why we’re keeping our old ones as long as I can keep them going. Besides the little plastic clip the drier has been flawless. I could probably cook a roast in it.

I’m looking at new appliances and saw this pop bottle holder recently.

I quite like it so think I’ll 3D print myself something similar for a few cents worth of plastic.

This kind of bottle holder seems like a good idea but some funky shaped soda bottles like the C oca m ight not hold on that and putting a C hampagne bottle on it might also not be the best.

After the fact i remembered the word i was looking for on my original post, it’s “shelf”, it’s simply the bottom shelf on the door that did crack without being abused :
